Presidents Day is just around the corner.
The federal holiday, which falls on Monday, Feb. 20, in 2023, may come as a breather for investors, who have had to navigate a volatile stock market of late.
On Thursday, the Dow Industrial Average fell 1.3%, the S&P 500 dropped 1.4%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slipped1.8%. So far this year, the indexes are up 1.7%, 6.5%,and 13.3%, respectively, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
Here’s what you need to know if you’re looking to trade on Presidents Day.
Is the Stock Market Open on Presidents Day 2023?
The New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq Stock Market, over-the-counter markets, and bond markets will all be closed in observance of Presidents Day.
The bond markets will resume regular hours on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 8 a.m. Eastern, while the other U.S. markets will reopen at 9:30 a.m.
What About International Markets? Will They Be Open or Closed?
Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the London Stock Exchange, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the Paris Stock Exchange, and the Hong Kong Exchange will be open on Monday.
What Should I Know About Presidents Day?
Officially referred to as Washington’s Birthday, Presidents Day is observed on the third Monday in February and meant to honor all U.S. presidents, according to Britannica. The first U.S. president, George Washington, was born on February 22, 1732.
Three other U.S. presidents had February birthdays: William Henry Harrison, who was born on Feb. 9, 1773; Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12, 1809; and Ronald Reagan, who was born on Feb. 6, 1911.
What Should I Watch in the Markets?
Market participants may be expecting to see stocks slide on Tuesday. Since 1971, the S&P 500 has slipped an average of 0.13% on the day after Presidents Day, with the index closing higher about 51.9% of the time, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
Next week, investors will be awaiting earnings from companies such as
Home Depot
(ticker: HD) and
Walmart
(WMT). The release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes from the Jan. 31 – Feb. 1 meeting will also be on investors’ minds.
